Haley Mellin (born in San Francisco, CA; lives and works in Union City, NJ) is an artist focusing on painting and land conservation. Her work is observational and done in a seasonal studio outside. The paintings are made from gouache – a water-based material; the drawings are made from charcoal – a plant-based carbon. Recent solo shows include Dittrich & Schlechtriem, Berlin (2024); Giovanni's Room, Los Angeles (2023); The Journal Gallery, New York (2022); group exhibitions include Hauser & Wirth (2024); Micki Meng and Parker Gallery (2023); and Blanc Studios (2023).
In interest of supporting artists and galleries connecting with land conservation, she founded Art into Acres. AiA is an artist-run, non-profit organized to support permanent large-scale land conservation on behalf of the arts community. The initiative has supported a range of new permanent protected areas including new Indigenous protected areas, community-conserved areas, municipal parks, regional parks, and national parks.
Haley conducted the first carbon calculations for a range of museums and galleries supported by grants from the Teiger Foundation, and co-founded art and climate initiatives PACT, Art and Climate Action, MOCA EC, GCC LA, GCC NY and Artists Commit. She earned a PhD from NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and a BA from U.C. Berkeley. Haley was a student of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, and is mentored by South African artists rosenclaire.
